Is Weight Loss Surgery the Answer for You?
Published by weightlossguru | Filed under Weight Loss Surgery, Weight Loss Tips
Weight Loss Surgery is a life-altering decision — one of the most important decisions a person will ever make. Weight loss surgery limits the amount of food you can take in. Some operations also restrict the amount of food you can digest. Many people who have the surgery lose weight quickly. If you follow diet and exercise recommendations, you can keep most of the weight off.
The most important step in weight loss surgery is getting all of the information you need about the various surgical options. Ultimately your bariatric surgeon and other physicians are your best resource for information about the procedure they will recommend to you for weight loss. The procedure involves placing an adjustable Gastric Band around the upper part of your stomach to create a pouch. The pouch fills up quickly and the food passes slowly through a gap, formed by the band, into the rest of the stomach. The food then passes normally through the rest of the digestive system.
The operation usually requires an overnight stay in hospital and is done under general anaesthesia. This means you will be asleep during the procedure. For more information, please see the separate BUPA health factsheet, General anaesthesia.
Your surgeon will explain the benefits and risks of having a gastric band fitted, and will also discuss the alternatives to the procedure.
Another Weight Loss Surgery method is by having a Gastric Bypass surgery, It makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine. You will feel full more quickly than when your stomach was its original size, which reduces the amount of food you eat and thus the calories consumed. Bypassing part of the intestine also results in fewer calories being absorbed. This leads to weight loss.
